Performing... the start

How, with whom, when.

At school - junior(?) started violin lessons; (senior) started clarinet lessons.

Whilst I did not become splendidly adept/efficient/virtuosity it did give me great experience and practice at reading, plus an understanding of the difference between instruments - not all just "see note; play note"

Sweetheart (?)

"Roadie" for Dave, Tink and Andy - played "percussion" and "sang / chanted" at a couple of gigs.

Andy and I often spent time messing about on any piano we could find and use - mine in particular, 'cos we could both sit and bang the keyboard without any comeplains from parents.

Redshift

Dave, Tink and Nick formed a band and found a great young drummer - Malc. I watched them rehearse in the barn where Nick lived. They sounded great!

Then, in the pub that evening, they approached me and asked if I would like to join. I was  I was flabberghasted, but accepted.

We had a trial rehearsal at xxxxxx. It was hard work at first, trying to gauge what was needed and when. Then someone - Dave? - started playing the Who song "My Wife". All of a sudden we were playing together and sounded Just So. Wow!

We were called Redshift (why? Dave's suggestion?)

(Say couple of notable gigs - Fareham Tech, Bolton(?) Uni?, Winchester Art Coll as support for Roogalator)

After we broke up, Dave and I tried a couple of things; Nick and I tried a couple of things...

I wrote a thing for Dave/Ninian group, called ""

Ali Rigg

Started singing with Ali's Community Choir, even though I did not think I was any good. Learnt that I could sing - and, on one occasion, she asked me to do the solo part of a song for our gig!

Braddyl Friends

I was approached by Robin (he was part of Ali's choir) and he asked me if I would like to join a local singing group he had formed! I was flabberghasted, but accepted. It was a twelve piece - three bass blokes, three tenor blokes, three alto ladies and three soprano ladies. Robin said it would be a couple of sessions, if I liked and they liked I could join.

In both groups I was trying to sing tenor. At my Dad's funeral I was talking to my cousin Deborah Aloba who is a splendid mezzo and who teaches singing. She said "You're a baritone." I said, "No, I'm a tenor and I ..." She said "No. You're a baritone. I can hear it in your voice."

She was right.
