My copy of The Planets - got it 1965 Christmas - Sir Malcolm “Flash” Sargent.
Wow! Pre only had the two 78s - Mars and Jupiter. Lovely gentle Venus; lovely light Mercury… and, of course, the stunning Neptune. Another LP to play over and over.
At some point tried a copy with Boult conducting. It sounded, er, boring - bo-o-oring.
Now I have “several” versions, including two delightful recordings of Holst himself
So why are there several versions of the same piece of music? What are the advantages? What might we learn from hearing these versions? And - of course! - is there a "Best"?
